The Crescent Bag
A sculptural everyday leather bag, designed for Glad & Young Studio.
a grab-and-go bag designed to
carry by hand or on the shoulder.
Originally developed from a brief by Glad & Young Studio, The Curved Shoulder Bag expands the product line as a mid-sized, everyday zippered silhouette, perfect for the creative on-the-go customer.
The bag is crafted with natural grain leather which which provides enough structure to stand upright, but flexible enough for daily essentials.
With a continuous, unbroken silhouette, complete with a 20 inch zipper for added security and ease of access, this bag is sure to be a conversation starter.

Scale Models
- Scale models were made to conserve leather and confirm design theories.

Western Crunch Water Buffalo
- Rigidity allows for great architectural properties, but is not compatible with a continuous silhouette
- Unforgiving and time consuming to manufacture
- Requires costly piping details for a finished look

Strap Connections and Zipper Finishing
- Adding zipper tabs made the strap connection bulky
- Sewing straps into the bag body allowed for a finished edge, but created bulk and visual clutter to the continuous silhouette.

Initial Patternmaking
- Decisions, calculations, and patterns were made regarding size of bag body, degree of curvature, length of zipper, and strap dimensions.
prototyping
The design evolved through the prototyping process in order to prioritize clean design and ease of manufacturing.

-One continuous strap thickness causes
the strap to fall off the shoulder.
-Strap connection is bulky and a
design eyesore.
RESOLUTION
The strap is sewn to the bag with raw edges, creating a clean, continuous solution for strap attachments, while highlighting the handmade quality that Glad & Young prides themselves on.
The strap profile narrows at the shoulder for a secure fit and widens at its ends to conceal the connection points at the bag body.
By cutting the bag body in half at the center bottom, dies can be oriented as nesting pairs, reducing waste during production.
